Democracy is merely a mechanism for electing people (majority rule), which by itself is not good; what makes democracy beneficial to human beings is liberal constraints—protection of property, civil and political rights, and binding constraints on rulers so neither majorities nor elites can exploit citizens. Hamas is a democracy but not a free society.
