For 500,000 years, humans have had essentially the same cognitive architecture with the ability to hold about four to seven things in working memory, terrible at retrieval, but great at pattern recognition when patterns are in front of us, and really bad at pattern recognition when patterns are scattered across time like six months of half-remembered conversations at work.
