Economists pre-2000 would have predicted Wikipedia could not work because of the free-rider problem—everyone would happily read it but no one would create it without profit or glory; they were wrong because they misunderstood the pure pleasure (plus small private non-monetary returns like comments and recognition) that overcomes free-riding, making such voluntary contribution a massive positive social externality unprecedented in human history.
